Hello ORCSA members,
The Spring meeting was held June 21, 2014 with 28 people in attendance! Andy Kavalauskas presided. The minutes from the last meeting were read, Anita Guiher moved they be approved and Brenda Damschroder seconded. The budget was discussed. Myron Knapp moved it be approved and Deb Bechstein seconded. Advertising in Rural Heritage magazine is $155/year (6 bimonthly issues) for a business card size ad. Brenda moved we place the ad and Al Slidell seconded (I MUST read Robert’s Rules of Order; I just know this is not worded correctly!!).
Old/New Business: The scripts for Equine Affaire must be sent to the EA office two weeks before the event. Andy had to write up scripts on the fly because none of us who attended all four days could find the ones that were already written up. In the future, the scripts for Equine Affaire will be submitted to me, either via US mail or email, so that I can get them sent in on time. Equine Affaire registration information also needs to be sent to me, so I can coordinate everything. With regard to the insurance for the ORCSA stall, instead of having Tim Myers carry the insurance, the Shire Horse Association and the Clydesdale Association are going to be contacted to see if either group will add the ORCSA stall to their insurance. Todd Riedel is going to check into this.
Emily Riedel needs pictures from Equine Affaire for our Facebook page. Any and all are welcome. She shared ORCSA’s page with Draft Horse Friends and got 88 likes. Draft Horse Friends has 22,000 fans”. Facebook is a great platform for getting ORCSA out in the public eye. Now that the Ohio state fair is done, there should be tons of pictures as it looks like many members participated and WON!!!! There is no word yet from Ron Swartz about the pictures and calendar. He spent a lot of time at Equine Affaire, taking lots and lots of pictures. Mike Oxender facetiously nominated Deb Bechstein to be the 2015 calendar chairperson. She promptly refused! Maria Slidell will email an electronic version of a calendar (but I don’t know to whom – guess that’s why I shouldn’t wait so long to write up my notes!). Progress Days at Mt. Hope decided to only use local Amish horses for safety reasons. The Ohio Percheron Breeders Association is tentatively planning on hosting a Draft Education Day for youth and adults next year. sometime between the end of May and the beginning of June. Braiding, driving, and harnessing are a few of the skills they will be showcasing. They are trying to get youth interested in working with drafts and working to get their parents comfortable with the horses. It will take place at the Fredericktown office; will be open to all with registration and a fee for lunch. Again, this is VERY tentative. Stay tuned for more information at the December ORCSA meeting in Columbus.
The Fall Outing and Meeting will be held at Norm and Anita Guiher’s on Sunday, October 5 beginning at noon. A map with directions is attached. Lunch, meeting, and activity are the order for the day. Shane Chamey, farrier, will demonstrate how he works with a horse who won’t stand still for the farrier without stocks. We need someone to bring their “uncooperative” horse to the meeting. Please call Anita Guiher at 440-965-4477 to let her know if you’re interested.
I urge EVERYONE to attend this meeting as it’s so helpful for me and the other newer members to be able to put names and faces together. Please bring lawn chairs and a dish to share. And anyone you know who likes Clydesdales and Shires. The more, the merrier.
The current membership list is included in this issue. If anything has changed since you sent in your registrations, please don’t hesitate to email me and let me know so I can keep the list up to date. Also included is the Wayne County Fair Sunday Hitch Show Entry Form and the Hitch Class listing. It is Sunday, September 7 beginning at 10:00am. Entry fee of $7 per class is paid at the time of entry.
I look forward to seeing everyone in October, if not sooner!!
